About Living Hope

Who We Are

Our mission is leading people to become fully-devoted followers of Jesus. Our vision is showing God’s love for our neighbors in St Clair Shores and Metro Detroit through 1) the deep study of Scripture, 2) care for the least, the last, and the lost, and 3) opportunities to encourage faith in Jesus and transformation into His likeness.

A congregation of the EPC

Our Beliefs

Living Hope Church is a congregation of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church — a global movement of evangelistic Presbyterians. All EPC congregations hold to a shared set of core doctrines called the Essentials, which represent the center of orthodox Protestant faith and are reproduced here.

All Scripture is self-attesting, and being Truth requires our unreserved submission in all areas of life. The infallible Word of God — the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments — is a complete and unified witness to God's redemptive acts culminating in the incarnation of the Living Word, the Lord Jesus Christ. The Bible, uniquely and fully inspired by the Holy Spirit, is the supreme and final authority on all matters on which it speaks. On this sure foundation, we affirm these additional essentials of our faith.

Essential 1

We believe in one God, the sovereign Creator and Sustainer of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. To Him be all honor, glory, and praise forever!

Essential 2

Jesus Christ, the living Word, became flesh through His miraculous conception by the Holy Spirit and His virgin birth. He who is true God became true man united in one Person forever. He died on the cross a sacrifice for our sins according to the Scriptures. On the third day He arose bodily from the dead, ascended into heaven where, at the right hand of the Majesty on High, He now is our High Priest and Mediator.

Essential 3

The Holy Spirit has come to glorify Christ and to apply the saving work of Christ to our hearts. He convicts us of sin and draws us to the Savior, indwelling our hearts. He gives new life to us, empowers and imparts gifts to us for service. He instructs and guides us into all truth, and seals us for the day of redemption.

Essential 4

Being estranged from God and condemned by our sinfulness, our salvation is wholly dependent upon the work of God's free grace. God credits His righteousness to those who put their faith in Christ alone for their salvation, and thereby justifies them in His sight. Only such as are born of the Holy Spirit and receive Jesus Christ become children of God and heirs of eternal life.

Essential 5

The true Church is composed of all persons who through saving faith in Jesus Christ and the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit are united together in the body of Christ. The Church finds her visible yet imperfect expression in local congregations where the Word of God is preached in its purity and the sacraments are administered in their integrity, where scriptural discipline is practiced, and where loving fellowship is maintained. For her perfecting she awaits the return of her Lord.

Essential 6

Jesus Christ will come again to the earth — personally, visibly, and bodily — to judge the living and the dead, and to consummate history and the eternal plan of God. “Even so, come, Lord Jesus” (Revelation 22:20).

Essential 7

The Lord Jesus Christ commands all believers to proclaim the gospel throughout the world and to make disciples of all nations. Obedience to the Great Commission requires total commitment to “Him who loved us and gave Himself for us.” He calls us to a life of self-denying love and service. “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10).

Pastor Jason Huff
Pastoral leadership

Meet Pastor Jason

Jason and his family have been exploring Metro Detroit together for nearly twenty years. He and his wife Catha have been married thirty years this August, and they have two sons. Jason heard God's call to pastoral ministry after several years leading worship in the Indianapolis area. He has a passion for bringing difficult biblical concepts into the everyday world as we dive deep into Scripture together.

Outside of church life, you'll find him reading science fiction, watching films, checking out the latest board games, or spending time with his family over pizza at Green Lantern. He's convinced that a small church that loves its city well can do more than anyone would imagine — and Living Hope is proof.

Our building

The Harbor

The Harbor is the name for our building at 24010 Harper Ave in St. Clair Shores. Adapted from a former bounce house and Secretary of State office, The Harbor combines the warm aesthetic of a traditional church with modern design. It serves as our gathering place for worship, RAVE Groups, service projects, and community events.

The Harbor is a refuge, a place for us to catch our breath and find our bearings. We come to The Harbor to be refreshed in Christ, and we leave ready to be His church to a hurting world.

RAVE Groups

We open the Word together on Sunday mornings, but the conversation just begins there. RAVE Groups are Living Hope's small group ministry, meeting several times throughout the week in a variety of settings: at The Harbor, in homes, and on Zoom. Whatever your schedule or comfort level, there's a place for you to plug in. Many members became a part of Living Hope through exploring our RAVE Groups first.

Each week's study is written specifically around the same Scripture we're working through on Sunday, which means we're continuing a conversation already in progress. Groups dig into the text, wrestle with the hard questions, and do it together in community. The goal is simple: we want to encounter God throughout the week as we hear from Him through the Scripture we study Sundays.

If you're interested in joining a RAVE Group, reach out to Pastor Jason and he'll help you find the right fit.

Walking with Jesus

Discipleship is the shape of the Christian life itself. At Living Hope, we're committed to helping every person we meet grow in their walk with Jesus.

Step 1

Connect

Connecting with Christ is where faith and discipleship begin. We take the big questions seriously: Who is God? Who am I? How does faith speak to our disappointments, struggles, and failures? We explore these in community, discovering what the historic, unchanging Christian faith has always said to an ever-changing world. Our Connect team provides many different opportunities to get to know the people of Living Hope Church and the love of Christ before you ever step into our sanctuary.

Our ministries include
  • Outdoor Movie Night
  • Family Game Night
  • Harper Cruise
  • Trunk or Treat
Step 2

Grow

Growing in the likeness of Jesus is essential for every disciple, and we believe it happens best in community. First, we grow by celebrating God's grace to us and worshiping Him through timeless liturgy, Biblically-rich sermons, and acoustic music that's both traditional and modern. Then RAVE Groups are where that growth takes root, in small groups meeting at The Harbor, in homes, and on Zoom. Each study is built around the same Scripture we're working through on Sundays, so the conversation keeps going all week long. Reach out to Pastor Jason to find the right group for you. Besides our RAVE Groups, our Grow team offers a variety of ways for you to deepen your faith throughout the year.

Our ministries include
  • Summer With Louie
  • Family Fun Night
  • Harvest Party
  • Advent Tea
Step 3

Go + Serve

God's love changes us — and sends us. Go + Serve is how Living Hope puts faith into action in St. Clair Shores and the surrounding communities. Whether through individual service, small group projects, or congregation-wide efforts, we look for ways to love our neighbors with the same love that saved us and is shaping us into the likeness of Christ. When you're ready to serve, you'll find others at Living Hope excited to serve alongside you.

Our ministries include
  • Free Diaper Pantry
  • Operation Christmas Child
  • Detroit Thanksgiving
  • Bernadette’s Faith In Action
